Time to act against sexual violence in conflict
London is hosting a global summit devoted to the elimination of rape in conflicts. Sexual crimes occur during any armed conflicts and military operations: many women, young boys and girls are exposed to rape. The Armenian people experienced such a tragedy especially at the beginning of the 20th century when thousands of women were subjected to rape and sexual slavery by Turkish people. Such phenomenon was also recorded during Sumgayit massacres and other conflicts in 90s. During the massacre occurred in Ruanda in 1994 – when 800 people (20% of population) were murdered just within 100 days – according to data of UN the number of raped women was 250000.
