(p. 11)<\/li>\n<li>More than <strong><em>140 million women<\/em><\/strong> are considered missing today as a consequence of gender-biased and post-natal sex selection. (p. 59)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Some <strong><em>200 million<\/em><\/strong> girls and women alive today have undergone some form of genital mutilation.<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Countries with high rates of female genital mutilation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Egypt<\/u>: <strong><em>92%<\/em><\/strong> of women who are or have ever been married have been subjected to FGM. (p.92)<\/li>\n<li><u>Djibouti<\/u>, <u>Guinea<\/u> and <u>Mali<\/u>: <strong><em>90%<\/em><\/strong> or more women have been subjected to FGM. (p.70)<\/li>\n<li><u>Indonesia<\/u>: <strong><em>49% <\/em><\/strong>of girls aged 11 or younger have been subjected to FGM. (p.70)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Around the world, about <strong><em>one in five<\/em><\/strong> children is married. <\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Two in five<\/em><\/strong> children are married in <u>West and Central Africa<\/u> &#8211; the world\u2019s highest rate. (p.97)<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>One in three<\/em><\/strong> children is married in <u>East and Southern Africa<\/u>. (p.97)<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>One in four<\/em><\/strong> girls is married or in an informal union in <u>Latin America and the Caribbean<\/u>. (p.97)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Harmful practices happen in industrialized countries too.<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As many as 1,600 girls in <u>Ireland<\/u>, 1,300 girls in <u>Portugal<\/u> and 11,000 girls in <u>Sweden<\/u> may have been subjected to FGM in 2011. In the <u>United States<\/u>, 513,000 girls were at risk of, or had been subjected to, FGM in 2012. (p.70, 73)<\/li>\n<li>Between 2000 and 2005, more than <strong><em>200,000 children<\/em><\/strong> were married in the <u>United States<\/u>. (p.102)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Education is a powerful tool in eliminating harmful practices.<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 15 sub-Saharan African countries, each additional year of secondary school significantly reduced the chance of child marriage and childbirth under the age of 18. (p.111)<\/li>\n<li>In <u>India<\/u>: (p.100)\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>51%<\/em><\/strong> of girls with no education are married by age 18<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>47%<\/em><\/strong> of girls with only a primary education are married by age 18<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>29%<\/em><\/strong> of girls with only a secondary education are married by age 18<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>4%<\/em><\/strong> of girls with a post-secondary education are married by age 18<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Harmful practices impact girls and women, communities, and countries\u2019 development.<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In just 12 countries where child marriage is prevalent, the loss of human capital would come to <strong><em>$63 billion<\/em><\/strong> between 2017 and 2030, much more than these countries received in official development assistance.
