The Coalition to Stop Violence against Women has issued a statement on the renaming of the Domestic Violence Prevention Bill. The statement reads as follows:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“We learned from the agenda of today’s session of the Armenian government that the name of the draft law” On the prevention of domestic violence and the protection of victims of domestic violence” has changed. The draft law is now titled “Prevention of Domestic Violence, Protection of Domestic Violence Victims and Restoration of Solidarity in the Family”.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is still clear from the title that the bill has been subject to a conceptual change. Changing from the emphasis on individual protection and support to family solidarity, which does not have any legal definition and contradicts international legal formulations.<\/p>\n

 <\/strong><\/p>\n

It should be noted that the Coalition to Stop Violence against Women has initially voiced a number of issues in the draft, but now, after changes in the conceptual, ideological and human rights issues ignore its disagreement over such a project.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now, the lawyers of the Coalition to Stop Violence against Women are reviewing the changes made in the draft, and soon we will give a detailed comment and a legal assessment of each revised provision.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Before that, we demand from the Government of Armenia and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, as the main public non-governmental organization dealing with domestic violence.<\/p>\n

  1. To restore the previous name of the bill, deriving from the imperative of protecting the individual’s right, and conforming to the international formulation of legal instruments regulating domestic violence.<\/li>\n
  2. To abstain from making amendments that are contrary to the bill, contradicting human rights and international legal norms. “<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
