There was no alternative.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The newly elected Speaker is a candidate of the philosophical sciences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Syria held parliamentary elections on April 13. 250 deputies were elected of which 200 \u00a0&#8211; from the National progress front; \u00a0it is governed by the &#8220;Baath&#8221; party. The opposition boycotted the elections. Turnout was 57.5 percent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that Syrian women received the right to vote and to be elected in 1953 by the Constitution. In 1973-1977, only five members out of 186 members of the Syrian parliament were women.
