{"id":14915,"date":"2014-02-11T23:13:47","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T23:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archive.womennet.am?p=14915"},"modified":"2014-02-11T23:20:35","modified_gmt":"2014-02-11T23:20:35","slug":"%d5%b3%d5%a1%d5%ba%d5%b8%d5%b6%d5%ab%d5%a1%d5%b5%d5%ab-%d5%af%d5%a1%d5%b6%d5%a1%d5%b5%d6%84-%d5%b4%d5%a5%d6%80%d5%aa%d5%b8%d6%82%d5%b4-%d5%a5%d5%b6-%d5%bd%d5%a5%d6%84%d5%bd%d5%a8-%d5%b6%d5%b8%d6%80","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.womennet.am\/en\/%d5%b3%d5%a1%d5%ba%d5%b8%d5%b6%d5%ab%d5%a1%d5%b5%d5%ab-%d5%af%d5%a1%d5%b6%d5%a1%d5%b5%d6%84-%d5%b4%d5%a5%d6%80%d5%aa%d5%b8%d6%82%d5%b4-%d5%a5%d5%b6-%d5%bd%d5%a5%d6%84%d5%bd%d5%a8-%d5%b6%d5%b8%d6%80\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Sex strike&#8217; by Tokyo women fails to stop election of new governor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.womennet.amwp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/japan-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Tokyo has elected a new governor despite a \u201csex strike\u201d held by a group of women in protest against men who voted for him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The action from &#8220;the association of women who will not have sex with men who vote for Masuzoe&#8221; comes after 65-year-old Yoichi Masuzoe said in an interview with a men\u2019s magazine in 1989 that women are \u201cnot normal\u201d during their periods, and are therefore unfit to govern.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Three thousand women are following the campaign since it started last week, the<em>Guardian<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>reported.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Their profile reads: \u201cWe have stood up to prevent Mr Masuzoe, who makes such insulting remarks against women [from being elected] \u2026 We won&#8217;t have sex with men who will vote for Mr Masuzoe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Backed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Masuzoe won Tokyo\u2019s gubernatorial election on Sunday, and was given a mandate to restart Japan\u2019s 50 nuclear reactors.<br \/>\nHe defeated two candidates who had pledged they would end nuclear power, in a contest that was widely seen as a test of public opinion on atomic power in a nation shaken by the Fukushima nuclear disaster.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the landslide election, he received 2.1 million votes: more than the combined total of the two anti-nuclear candidates, human rights lawyer Kenji Utsunomiya and former Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa, who finished second and third.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the city cleaning up from a rare snowstorm, turnout was a low 46.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Fukushima disaster has left me without words, but reducing our dependence on nuclear power needs to be done gradually,&#8221; Masuzoe said after his victory.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yoshiro Mori, president of organizing committee for the Tokyo Olympics, welcomed Masuzoe&#8217;s victory from Sochi, Russia, where he is attending the winter games.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before becoming involved in politics in 2001, Masuzoe was a political scientist and a celebrity on TV chatshows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He remarked in the 1980s: &#8220;Women are not normal when they are having a period \u2026 You can&#8217;t possibly let them make critical decisions about the country [during their period] such as whether or not to go to war.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A similar anti-Masuzoe campaign was launched by a separate group of women last Wednesday.
