Only six women in the Tavush province have been nominated as candidates for council of elders
On November 5th local self-governing bodies’ local government elections will be held in the Berd region of Tavush province, where communities are enlarged and council is elected. and elections of the council of elders in the towns of Yenokavan, Aygehovit will be held in the Ijevan region. Achajur community will elect a community leader.
In Tavush, two political forces are taking part in the elections to the local self-government: Republican and ARF. In fact, in every election, women’s involvement in this election is limited to the election campaign by the candidate for the council. No community has nominated a candidate for female head of community. 6 female candidates have been nominated for the Council of Elders elections in Tavush province. The total number of candidates for the council is 58. There are 38 candidates running for the enlarged Berd district council elections, of which 3 are women.
Anna Avalyan, headmaster of Berd Craftsmen College, is a female candidate for the City Council, as well as an acting Elder. For more than 24 years she has been leading the Berd State College, has been awarded the Presidential Honor for her best teacher. Anna Avalyan is a member of the Republican Party, a candidate for council of elders. By the way, Anna does not exclude that one day she will nominate her candidacy for community head.
Having a management experience, the elder candidate has the plans to try to raise the issue of community transport if elected. “The most important issue for us is to get the intercommunity transport as soon as possible. The availability of good roads and transportation is the most important to me. It is impossible to tell the villager to use taxi service every day, make a two-way payment from 4 to 5,000 AMD if a person needs 2-3 times a week to reach the center. And going from villages to Berd is from 4 to 5,000 AMD. The most important problem for me is the transportation problem”.
Wishing good luck to all the candidates, let’s notice that women are heavily struggling with men, the competition is often tough. It starts right from the moment of nomination, and how many of these 6 women will be selected will show the degree of rigidity of the electoral struggle.
