National Assembly Elections -2018: the highest number of female candidates

At today’s sitting, the Central Electoral Commission has ratified the Protocol on the preliminary results of the December 9th National Assembly extraordinary elections.

According to official data, 1 million 260 thousand 840 out of 2.592. 481 citizens or 48.63% of voters participated in the voting.

According to the preliminary results, only three political forces will represent the National Assembly of the 7th convocation: “My Step” bloc (70.43%), “Prosperous Armenia” party (8.27%), “Bright Armenia” party (6.37%).

Other political forces have not overcome the necessary threshold for entering the National Assembly, which makes up 5% for parties and 7% for alliances.

Armenia’s new parliament will have 132 deputies

While the Central Electoral Commission is calculating how many MPs will be in the future parliament, how many representatives will be represented in the legislature, the press has already made strict preliminary informal calculations, according to which the new parliament will have 132 deputies, while the number of deputies in the current parliament is 105.

Based on the strict preliminary list of elected MPs in the press, one can conclude that none of the political forces in the parliament can provide 25% of women’s representation, and the number of women receiving MP mandates cannot exceed 18. The problem is in territorial lists, as half of the deputies are distributed by national lists and the other half by territorial lists, and the number of female candidates having enough votes in the constituencies is very limited. This is due to the fact that the territorial lists are called “rating”. According to approximate calculations, only seven women will get a mandate by rating system.
