Narine Tukhikyan: “Yerevan of My dreams is fair and happy”

Director of Hovhannes Tumanyan Museum Narine Tukhikyan (Khachaturyan), who is nominated by the “My Step” bloc in snap elections in Yerevan Council of Elders, is non-partisan. This is a matter of principle for herself. Although she shares and supports almost all the ideas of the alliance, she will never be a member of the party, as she appreciates her freedom more than anything.

Tukhikyan thinks the sowing of the idea of freedom is her greatest achievement. “I have been working for 10 years in the state structure and I believe that my greatest victory and achievement is the rise of people’s civil consciousness inside that structure. When I was new to work, many did not have a stand at the museum, but now I see that a lot has changed. People realize that they have the right to a dignified life, struggle. In order to achieve that, I have often gone through a devil, realizing that perhaps it will be my last job as a museum director, but for me the freedom of thought is a supreme value. I believe that only a free man can be strong, “she says.

For the director of the Tumanyan Museum, a special red light was banned “Eclipse” by the RA Ministry of Culture. The ban on the Stalinist repression victims was an indicator that could not be worse. “When I was banished, I thought that it was a blasphemy against the memory of all the victims of Tumanyan, his family, and the Stalin repressions. Then I realized that it was a disgrace to those who banned the show, because that meant that neobolshevism did not disappear, it was there, and it was sitting in the Ministry of Culture and the Government. Neo-Bolsheviks were the ones who spoke ridiculous words about culture. People themselves lustrated, “says Tukhikyan.

Ms. Tukhikyan’s proposal to be included in the “My Step” alliance was taken shortly after thinking. She acknowledges that the decision was crucial to the fact that the proposal was voiced by a political force that finally managed to consolidate the whole society. “I am convinced that the society was ready to unite, but the contribution of Nikol Pashinyan and his political team is indispensable because only they managed to lead the whole nation,” says Tukhikyan. It was followed by recommendations from other political forces, but the decision was already taken.

Tukhikyan is convinced that the situation has changed in the country. Presenting a concrete political force in the council will not hurt her. On the day when “My Step” bloc’s actions will contradict her principles, she will come out of alliance and council of elders. “The happiness of our country, our city was robbed. It should be returned to people and done not only by inspiration, but also by concrete steps. An international organization has published a study saying Armenians were the unhappy people. Today people are starting to smile. The result of our work, our team’s efforts should be building a city of smiling, happy people. My Dreamy Yerevan should be fair and clean, where every citizen will feel his responsibility and importance in the life of the city, “she says.
