Pass the Domestic Violence Law now!
Domestic violence is a widespread and a serious problem in Armenia. According to reported police data 766 cases of domestic violence were registered in 2012, five women were killed, leaving behind 12 underage children. Meanwhile, thousands call Hotlines to seek help.
The Government of Armenia rejected the adoption of the “Domestic Violence Law” and because of it we lose precious time, innocent lives and leave women unprotected and subjected to inhumane and degrading treatment in their families. Gender-based violence or hate crimes are unique and don’t fit into the regular criminal or civil liability structures. The lack of an adequate RA Domestic Violence law also increases the burden on government bodies because, after all this is a serious public health problem as well as an economic one.
Domestic violence is not just a women’s issue; it is a human rights and national issue. The Government of Armenia has signed several international conventions based on which they are obliged to pass the domestic violence law and protect the rights of women. By failing to pass this critical legislation, the government is sending a very clear message to the Armenian people and the world: it won’t fulfill its obligations and that it considers the prevention of domestic violence a low-priority issue.
Domestic violence is inexcusable!
I’m raising my voice in support of the adoption of the “Domestic Violence Law” because it’s time to fight back against domestic abuse. We need your help.
