Anna Alexanyan: “We do not want to be elected as women, we want them to choose us for our projects and their work”
Our interlocutor is Anna Alexanyan, a candidate nominated by the “Citizen’s Decision” Social-Democrat Party, who will also compete in the No. 12 district of Syunik and Vayots Dzor.
She is an engineer-programmer, has graduated from Yerevan State Engineering University, Department of Applied Mathematics, but has not worked in her specialty. Instead, she has been active in the public sphere, involved in the activities of various NGOs, and in 2009 she founded Goris Women’s Development Resource Center with a group of Goris women, where she is the head of the program development department.
Speaking to WomenNet.am, she mentioned that more or less recognized ones know that she has devoted more than 15 years of her life to the development of the remote and border communities of her native Syunik and addressing many and many problems facing them. And running for parliament as a candidate, she intends to continue this important activity, but already in the legislative field.
- The main focus of my work is the issues of women and young people and the protection of their rights, even more so than the protection of women’s rights. And if elected, my activity in the National Assembly will definitely be directed to the voicing of these issues. Moreover, no matter how much we say, there is a movement, but it is so insignificant that it is quite difficult to consider moving. And my and my fellow partner’s efforts will be aimed at protecting women’s interests. I do not mention concrete proposals at this time, but I assure them that they will be aimed at raising the involvement of women in decision-making processes. This implies that there are certain mechanisms that will encourage the growth of women’s participation and their activism.
