The OSCE parliamentarians spoke about increasing the role of women in peace and security issues

The recent discussion at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, organized by “Helsinki + 50. In the framework of the “Call to Action” initiative, the aim was to draw the attention of political leaders and parliamentarians to the issue of how they can advance the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, and promote the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in the region.

The recent discussion at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, organized by “Helsinki +50. in the framework of the “Call to Action” initiative, was aimed at drawing the attention of political leaders and parliamentarians to the issue of how they can advance the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, and promote the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in the region.

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization, emphasizing the importance of national action plans, presented Sweden’s experience in strengthening that agenda. In particular, the adoption of a national program, the gender mainstreaming of all programs adopted by the state authorities, as well as a significant increase in funding for women’s organizations working for peace. He expressed confidence that this practice can also be applied in the OSCE area.

The Director of the OSCE Center for Conflict Prevention, Ambassador Tuula Jirjola (Finland), stressed the importance of ensuring the full, equitable participation of women in peace processes. “When women are involved in conflict resolution, peace is more likely to be not lasting,” she said.

During the discussion, the OSCE parliamentarians spoke about the experience of their countries, made observations on gender issues, as well as the role of women in security and peace building.

Former OSCE Secretary General, Ambassador, OSCE Senior Expert Lamberto Zannier summed up the discussion by emphasizing the importance of exchanging best practices in the OSCE area.
