How are women represented in community councils preparing for elections?
Local elections will be held in nine communities of Armenia on October 17, 6 of them are enlarged; the elections will be held by proportional system, majoritarian elections are expected in three villages.
In particular, local elections are scheduled for October 17 in three communities populated by national minorities, which will not be enlarged. In Shamiram of Aragatsotn region and Fioletovo of Lori region will be elected mayor and council of elders, in Ferik community of Armavir region, only the council of elders.
Local elections are scheduled for October 17 in Gyumri (Shirak), Goris (Syunik), Meghri (Syunik), Tat (Syunik), Tegh (Syunik), Dilijan (Tavush).
In these communities, a mayor and a council of elders will be elected. None of the current mayors is a woman.
In 5 of the communities, for the first time, the mayor and the council of elders will be elected through proportional elections, which means that the political forces will nominate the elections through voter lists. It also means that during all those proportional elections it will be enshrined in the RA Electoral Code.
In general, out of 9 communities preparing for the elections, women are represented in only three councils, and in one of them, in Gyumri, the representation of women was a requirement of the gender quota stipulated in the Electoral Code.
