Only two women were included in the newly elected NA Council
After electing the chairmen of the standing committees on August 12, the newly elected parliament completed the formation of the National Assembly Council. Although the representation of women in the National Assembly has significantly increased, reaching almost 34%, only 2 out of 19 members of the NA Council are women, which makes 10.5%.
The presidency of the National Assembly of the 8th convocation has an exclusively male face: both the speaker and his three deputies are men, although one of the vice-speakers has always been a woman since 2007. It seemed that the parliament would keep that tradition.
None of the three factions is led by a woman; the secretary of only one of the factions, the “Civil Contract”, is a woman, Nazeli Baghdasaryan.
Only two of the 12 NA standing committees will be chaired by women: Heriknaz Tigranyan from the “Civil Contract” faction and Taguhi Tovmasyan from the “I have honor” faction.
Heriknaz Tigranyan was elected chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Labor and Social Affairs with 71 votes in favor
Taguhi Tovmasyan elected Chairman of the Standing Committee on Human Rights և Public Affairs with 60 votes in favor.
For comparison, it should be noted that 4 women (22%) were included in the NA Council of the seventh convocation at the time of the election, in the positions of vice-speaker, two heads of two standing committees of one of the factions. Although women were significantly less represented in the previous parliament by 24%, their involvement in the NA Council was more proportional – 22% (situation as of 2019).
In this respect, the inclusion of only 10.5% of women in the NA Council of the eighth convocation is very disproportionate compared to the 34% representation of women in the parliament.
