Preliminary results of the extraordinary parliamentary elections. Has the political crisis been overcome?

The Central Electoral Commission has already published the protocol on the voting results of the special elections to the National Assembly.

According to that document, 1 million 282 thousand 411 people or 49.4% of voters exercised the right to vote out of 2 million 595 thousand 334 citizens who have the right to vote. 4682 ballots were declared invalid, the total amount of inaccuracies is 1110.

According to the preliminary results published by the commission, the “Civil Contract” party led by Nikol Pashinyan is leading with 53.92% of votes. 687,414 people voted for this force.

The “Armenia” bloc led by the second president of Armenia Robert Kocharyan is in the second place by the number of votes received. ARF Dashnaktsutyun. “Reborn Armenia” party received 21.04% or 268,300 votes.

The “I have honor” bloc is in the third place with 5.23% index. 66,647 people voted for the bloc consisting of the “Homeland” party led by the third president of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and former director of the National Security Service Arthur Vanetsyan. Although this political force has not been able to secure the 7% minimum threshold set for blocs to enter parliament, according to the Electoral Code, it will be represented in parliament as the third party with the highest number of votes.

According to unofficial data and preliminary calculations, the newly elected parliament will have 3 factions, among which the mandates will be distributed as follows:

“Civil contract” – 71 seats

“Hayastan” bloc – 29 seats

“I have honor” bloc – 7 seats.

It should be noted that there are misinterpretations in the calculations related to the distribution of mandates, which will be clarified only after the CEC announces the final results of the elections.

Has the political crisis been overcome?

Most of the forces participating in the early parliamentary elections have already made statements about the process and results of the elections.

The “Hayastan” bloc reaffirmed its approach that the results of the parliamentary elections are highly controversial and do not inspire confidence.

The “I have honor” bloc has announced that it will continue the struggle. The “5165” movement led by Karin Tonoyan (considers that these elections do not meet the standards of democratic elections) does not accept the election results. They note that there were inflated voter lists, inaccuracies, and power outages in the cities during the vote count.

“Tomorrow we will return to full-time work, but the conditions and the environment has changed significantly today, because Armenia has given a mandate to our government, this political team to establish a dictatorship of law in the country, the people have carried out a steel revolution,” Pashinyan said.

Agreeing with the observers’ observations that aggressive rhetoric was used during this campaign, he addressed all the participants of the political-public process. “The people of Armenia have made their decision, they have created a new political situation, the first point and the end of that situation is the following: I suggest all political forces, public participants, to start from a simple point, to end swearing. I urge all our supporters to stop swearing, unnecessary aggression, unnecessary hostility, because we are facing serious challenges, we must open this new, wonderful page of state-building.”
