Astghik Melkonyan: “I would like women to come to politics consciously and not just on the demand of the law”
Astghik Melkonyan, a member of the newly-formed Social-Democratic Party “Citizen’s Decision”, holds the 7th place in the voter list.
Astghik was born in the village of Haykavan of the Armavir region, studied at Yerevan State University, Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics. She currently serves as a project manager in IT. She has been actively involved in all civic movements, ranging from Electrical Yerevan to Velvet Revolution. She has repeatedly participated in the campaigns of the “Yelk” party during the whole period of the Velvet Revolution. She has always been in the “whirlpool” of the Republic Square, where she met his current Social-Democratic Party friends.
“All my friends in the ranks of the party who have struggled for their rights and public interests for many years,” said Astghik Melkonyan. “They are all advanced ideas and young people with a principled position. Our team has decided to create an independent political party to build a country that we want to see. When I got to know the ideology of the party, I was interested in it and was willing to work honestly and transparently, and realized that if I became a member of any party, it would only be the “Citizen’s Decision”, says Astghik.
In her conviction becoming a deputy of the National Assembly is not a major issue, but the wish to change something in the country’s socio-economic life has made her agree to the party’s proposal and to present her candidacy. By the rating system, Astghik will fight in the Armavir region.
Astghik welcomes active involvement of women in politics with only one reservation if it is not just forbidden. She agrees with the idea of equal rights and equal conditions for citizens in all areas of social life, regardless of gender.
