“My Step against Domestic Violence”

“Coalition to Stop Violence against Women” marks October 1st as the “National Day of Domestic Violence.” 2010 On October 1st, 20-year-old Zaruhi Petrosyan was killed by her husband’s brutal beating. This was not the only case in Armenia, but shocked the public with its brutality.

After the incident, NGOs concerned with domestic violence united, creating a “Coalition to Stop Violence against Women”, demanding a fair trial, preventing domestic violence and regulating the legislative field. In Armenia, every year cases of domestic violence are registered.

According to the RA Investigative Committee, 258 criminal cases of domestic violence were examined in the first half of 2018 against 215 cases in the previous year. Most of the criminal cases relate to violence against the spouse. During the same period, the hotline of the member organizations of “Coalition to Stop Violence against Women” operated and 1635 alarms were registered.

However, domestic violence is a type of torture that has been concealed. That’s why the information and statistics on this type of violence do not completely reflect the real picture. Domestic violence takes place in the family environment and is manifested both physically and psychologically, sexually and economically. Prevention of domestic violence starts with you and me, so it’s time to break the silence and stop violence.
