Local Elections: There are no women fighting for the post of the village mayor
Regular elections of local self-government bodies will be held on June 10th in 19 communities in Aragatsotn, Ararat, Armavir, Gegharkunik, Lori and Kotayk regions. 8 of the communities will elect only head of the community, 7 communities will elect only members of the Council of Elders and in four communities will be held simultaneously elections of community head and community council members.
WomenNet.am was informed by the Central Electoral Commission that only one of the 33 candidates running for the village mayor in 12 communities was a woman and she had withdrawn her application. Marine Asatryan is a pedagogue at the village secondary school, non-party, self-nominated.
There are 89 candidates for the Council of Elders, 15 of them women. Women representatives have applied for membership in local self-governing bodies in eight communities.
A small study shows that women running for presidency are mostly members of the current Council of Elders.
