“World Population 2017 ” reproductive health and rights in the age of inequality
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Armenia presented the report “The World’s Population-2017”, titled “Separated Worlds: reproductive health and rights in the age of inequality “.
The report generally addresses inequalities and impacts in areas such as maternal mortality, income distribution among the population and sex, the importance of employment and education for men and women, and more.
Representative of the United Nations Population Fund Armenia office, Garik Hayrapetyan, presenting the report, mentioned that for the first time Armenia has been leading in some directions. Particularly, Armenia’s successful story is presented as the best example of reducing inequality in terms of access to care for pregnant women and access to health care services.
Income Inequality
In terms of inequality, ten of the 25 most equitable countries in the world are in the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, including Armenia. Nevertheless, here there is inequality both between countries and within the country.
The largest inequality in income in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is in Turkey. The world’s largest economic inequality is in South Africa, the smallest -in Ukraine.
Maternal mortality
According to the report, Armenia is one of the world’s leading reproductive health providers. According to Garik Hayrapetyan, in 2008, state-run birth certificates were introduced in Armenia, providing free services to pregnant women, almost doubling the allocations to maternity care.
