“Parents want boys to have good profession and girls – to marry”
Although it is commonly said that the Armenian society is rooted in a special attitude to education, but there are parents who are themselves the reason of children remaining out of school – shown by the survey “Gender aspects of Education access” conducted by the Armenian office of OXFAM in 4 regions of Armenia – Tavush, Syunik, Lori, Vayots Dzor.
Although, according to paragraph 2d of Article 51 of the Family Code of the Republic of Armenia parents are obliged to provide education of children. Social insecurity is not always at the core of such a decision.
“Teachers, with the support of various NGOs and parents of other pupils, solve the problems of clothing, stationery items, but still they do not send the child to school. That is the common position of the family that education is not important or they have other reasons to do so, “says NGO representative involved in education issues.
The study identified cases where parents forbid girls to continue their education. Typically these funds interventions in the public authorities are limited or ineffective.
