Childhood the clutches of poverty / video/
On June 1, Children’s Day is celebrated worldwide. The number of children under 18 years in Armenia is 770 thousand, 210 thousand of which are up to 5 years. A third of our young citizens are growing up in poverty, and therefore we cannot protect our children right to have a happy childhood today. The most basic rights to survival, health and education are violated. This is evidenced by the latest report data published by the National Statistical Service “Poverty and social image – 2015”.
3.3% of children under 18 live in extreme poverty, while 34% are below the poverty line, while the extreme poor and poor make of 2.3 and 30.0% of the population respectively. That is, children are more vulnerable to the risk of poverty than the population as a whole. 41.1% of all children live in households in which the head does not work.
According to the report, children are poorest in the large families with many children. In families having three or more children under 18, 45.8% of children are poor, large families and 5.3% of – poor.
