UNHCR is concerned about the rape of refugee women and children
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for the Refugees is concerned about the reports on rape cases of women and children among refugees and migrants arriving in Europe. Some children are forced to reward for their services by sex.
UNHCR is concerned about the reports on abuse of women and children arriving in Europe which is worth of trust, – said Melissa Flemming /spokesman of UNHCR/ during the briefing held in Geneva.
According to her, this year 644 thousand refugees have arrived in Europe by sea. 34% of them are women and children. In addition to the risk of rape and abuse they are subjected to on the dangerous road journey to the coasts of Europe, women and children are exposed to many other risks in Europe, – said Melissa Fleming.
UNHCR spokesman urged authorities of the European states to take measures to protect women and girls, particularly to provide them shelters for temporary accommodation.
