Local self-governmental elections: women are not attracted to the Mayor’s position
As a result of local self-governmental elections held on September 13 in Aragatsotn, Armavir, Gegharquniq, Lori, K otayq, Shirak, Syuniq, Vayots Dzor, Tavush regions, the number of women community leaders was not changed in Armenia for the simple reason that no woman candidate was struggling to become a community leader or village mayor.
Let’s remind you that women have never occupied position of city mayor and today only 19 out of 866 rural communities are headed by women.
Last Sunday local elections were held only in 22 communities of Armenia. In 7 out of above-mentioned 22 communities only community leaders were elected, and in 7 of them community members were elected, and in 1 community – community leader and members at the same time. The majority of women nominated among 51 candidates of community council members won.
