The Suffragettes/ film
This is an engaging documentary about the campaign for the women’s vote in Britain in the early part of the 20th century.
P.S. Meryl Streep to play women’s lib icon Emmeline Pankhurst in new film Suffragette(2015 about the early days of the movement
Suffragette, which stars Carey Mulligan as Maude, a “foot soldier of the early feminist movement”, is to be directed by Brick Lane’s Sarah Gavron from a script by Abi Morgan. Morgan wrote The Iron Lady, the Margaret Thatcher biopic for which Steep won an Oscar two years ago. Streep will apparently feature in a keynote rally scene in which Pankhurst makes a speech.
Starring alongside Mulligan and Streep, are Helena Bonham Carter, Romola Garai , Anne-Marie Duff and Samuel West. The film apparently charts the early activists for womens’ lib and their run-ins with the government.
A drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. These women were not primarily from the genteel educated classes, they were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalized and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. Maud was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart-breaking and inspirational.
