«UNITE! Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls». 16 day campaign
Every year, more and more people around the world raise their voices to say a unanimous “No” to violence against women by participating in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which has been held since 1991.
It starts on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on December 10, the International Human Rights Day.
This year, the UN is celebrating the 16th anniversary under the slogan “UNITE to eliminate violence against women and girls”.
As in previous years, orange will be the key color uniting all activities of the 16-day event, drawing public attention to the issue of violence against women and girls.
In the world.
According to UN data.
Violence against women and girls remains the most common human rights violation in the world, affecting 1 in 3 women, and that rate has barely changed over the past decade.
Only 40 percent of abused women apply for any kind of help.
On average, more than 5 women or girls around the world are killed by someone in their family every hour. This means that every 11 minutes in the world, on average, one woman or girl is killed by her relatives or partner.
In Armenia.
According to the RA police.
In January-October 2022, 295 cases of domestic violence were registered in Armenia. A larger number of cases were registered in previous years. In 2021: 484 cases, in 2020: 536 cases.
Regarding the 295 cases registered this year, 100 criminal proceedings were initiated, 30 were sent to court, and 70 were dismissed on various grounds.
Cases of family violence are recorded mostly in the capital Yerevan, then in Shirak, Armavir, Kotayk, Ararat.
Most often, women are subjected to domestic violence by husbands and ex-husbands. There are many cases when parents become victims of children’s violence and vice versa, children suffer from parents’ violence.
According to the Coalition to Stop Violence against Women.
During this year, 10 women were killed in Armenia as a result of domestic violence.
There were 4,808 phone calls to the Coalition’s hotline in January-August this year, while in previous years there were 4,000-5,000 phone calls throughout the year.
If in previous years the Women’s Support Center provided assistance to an average of 300 beneficiaries, this year 550 women and children have already received assistance in the first semester alone.
In previous years, an average of 60-63 women and children lived in the shelters, this year, in the first half of the year, there were 91 women and children in the shelter.
