February 11 is the International Day of girls and women in science
It was proclaimed in December of 2015 by the UN General Assembly by adoption of resolution 70/212. In fact, this resolution was initiated nearly four dozen states including Armenia.
“On this International Day, I call on everyone to make the most decisive measures to combat discrimination, make huge investments in order to ensure access of women and girls to to such areas of education, as science and technology, engineering and mathematics, to also contribute to their long-term career growth and professional development, so that all mankind will be able to enjoy the fruits of their innovative achievements, -, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says on the occasion of the day.
Over the past 15 years, the international community has made significant progress in involvement of women and girls in science Despite this, women and girls still face limitations in this area. This is evidenced by the UN data. Meanwhile, science, innovation and gender equality being included in the development agenda by 2030 are an integral element in the achievement of development goals.
Although women have reached parity at bachelors and masters levels, where they make up 53%, but only 43% of women get a scientific degree. The gap is more pronounced among researchers, where women make up only 28.4%, and gets deeper at higher science, decision-making circles.
