Tokyo’s first woman mayor believes that steel ceiling is broken
First time in history the Japanese capital is headed by a woman. Voting declared the country’s former defense minister Yuriko Koike as a winner. Let’s note that two prior mayors were removed from this position because of financial abuse.
“In Tokyo the 20 candidates were struggling for the mayor position. It is noted that this woman is not inexperienced in «man’s affairs», as she was head of the armed forces of Japan. And if in America women figure out that they must break the glass ceiling, then Koike says that she slit the steel ceiling.
She is 64 years old, fluent in English and Arabic, graduated from Cairo University, worked for several years as a translator, then as a journalist, entered politics at the age of 40.
“I will focus my efforts on improving the lives of people, make Tokyo a city where everyone would prosper – women, men, children, elderly and those with disabilities. I will lead the city as it has not been led”, – said Yuriko Koike.
