Older people in Armenia and in the World
Today the world celebrates the World Day of Older people. Recently, the Global Age Watch Index has published a new ranking of the best countries for retirees. While preparing the table the experts took into account four factors characterizing the quality for life for the elderly – income, health, abilities and the environment.
Armenia occupies 43th place among 96 countries included in the list. According to the report, in 2015 elderly people comprise 16, 3% of the population of Armenia, in 2030 they will make 23, 8% and in 2050 – 33,1%.
Turkey is 75th, Georgia – 29th. Russia is in 65th place. The table tops are Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Canada and Netherlands. Pakistan, Tanzania and Afghanistan are in the last places of the list.
On occasion of the elderly day, womennet.am tried to figure out what older people are dissatisfied with, if they are satisfied with their pension, if Armenia is a favorable country for the elderly.
Elderly people in Armenia look enviously at foreign tourists of the same age travelling the world. 75-year-old Seda who lives in Ararat is even surprised that people of that age have the mood, interests and opportunities to travel on a plane around the world.
“I think life is over. I am pleased with my grandchildren, children but it is an incredible thing to travel and go to the other country”, – said a pensioner.
She receives pension of 39 000 AMD, she spent youth in farm gardens of Sovkhoz. Now she even does not count what she could do with 39 000 AMD if she lived alone.
