The Syrian Parliament led by a woman
For the first time a woman was elected as aspeaker of the Syrian parliament. 58-year-old Khadiya al-Abbas, who is from the right “Baath” party, was elected at the first session of the new parliament as a result of voting. There was no alternative.
The newly elected Speaker is a candidate of the philosophical sciences.
Syria held parliamentary elections on April 13. 250 deputies were elected of which 200 – from the National progress front; it is governed by the “Baath” party. The opposition boycotted the elections. Turnout was 57.5 percent.
It should be noted that Syrian women received the right to vote and to be elected in 1953 by the Constitution. In 1973-1977, only five members out of 186 members of the Syrian parliament were women. From 2012 to 2016 their number increased. 31 out of the 250 members were women.
