At what extent will the proposed bill contribute to elimination of sex-selective abortions? –Doctors’ Views
By adoption of the draft on making amendments in the RA Law “On Reproductive health and reproductive right” an attempt is made to legally prohibit sex-selective abortions maintaining a woman’s right to abortion during pregnancy.
What risks does the draft contain and at what extent will the proposed bill contribute to elimination of sex-selective abortions? In order to figure out answers to these questions womennet.am applied to some gynecologists. Many of them just avoided saying that they are busy but at the same time they hurried to say that they do not perform abortions at all.
However, gynecologists Eduard Hambardzumyan, Armine Mkhitaryan and Head of the Department of Reproductive and maternal health of the RA Ministry of Healthcare Gayane Avagyan expressed willingness to talk to us.
Decision is made by a woman; it does not depend on a doctor…
Founder of a “Fertility center” Eduard Hambardzumyan said that first of all the main purpose of himself and his colleges is to help people to have a child. He performed abortions 20 years ago.
“Abortions are always a trauma for a woman, even if she has many children. Now consciousness has risen and people understand and talk about psychological traumas. It is not a murder but a very bad thing.
The draft defines three days so that a woman can have time to consider her final decision. Eduard Hambardzumyan considers this opportunity as positive. He brings France as an example, where a woman is given 7 days and in most cases they change their mind. That is why he would give more time, but for the beginning it is not bad.
