Which are the 17 sustainable development goals?
Back in August of this year, 193 the UN Member states had reached agreement on draft of the final document which will be adopted by world leaders during the Summit on Sustainable Development to be held tomorrow in New York.
Concluding the ongoing process of negotiations of more than two years – unprecedented participation of civil society was typical of it – countries agreed on an ambitious agenda, which includes 17 goals aimed at elimination of poverty by 2030, promotion of prosperity and human welfare, while preserving the environment.
The Sustainable Development new agenda is based on the success of the Millennium Development Goals: goals that have helped more than 700 people get out of poverty. The eight Millennium Development Goals, which were adopted in 2000, were aimed at a wide range of issues, which included poverty, hunger, diseases, gender inequality reduction and ensuring access to water and sanitation by 2015.
New Sustainable development goals and sustainable development wide agenda go much further directing to the root reasons of poverty and the need for overall development which will function for all people.
