Three women directors are vying for the Golden Globe
For the first time in the 78-year history of the Golden Globe Awards, three women have been nominated for the Best Director nomination. This fact was especially emphasized by the international media in their headlines and article guides, presenting the candidates nominated in different nominations for the award.
According to The Guardian, during the past 78 years of the award ceremony, only five female directors have been nominated: Sofia Coppola, Jane Campion, Ava Du Verne, and Catherine Bigelow and Barbara Streisand have been nominated twice. It was an only American singer, actress, and film director Barbra Streisand, who won the award for the 1983 drama “Yentl”.
And so, in 2021, American actress, director Regina King, Chinese-American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer Chloe Zhao, British director, screenwriter, producer, actress Emerald Fennell will compete for the Best Director nomination. The majority of the candidates nominated in these nominations in previous years were men. This year the situation has changed. The three women will compete with two men for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Chicago Seven Trials” and David Fincher for “The Child.”
The BBC writes that Emerald Fennell, one of the women working with the camera, is better known to the audience from the movie “The Queen”, she played the role of Camilla Parker, the second wife of Prince Charles of Wales. However, the British figure was not nominated for her role, her first film “The Promising Young Girl” is on the list of nominees for the award.
Movie fans can recognize and remember Regina King, who won an Oscar at the 2018 Golden Globes for “If Beal Street Could Talk.”
Chinese director Chloe Zhao is the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Her candidacy was nominated for the film “Nomadland”.
“Nomadland” and “The Promising Young Girl” films are nominated in four categories, including “Best Drama”. Their rivals are the “Chicago Seven Trials”, “Child”, “Father” films.
It should be reminded that the last female director who was nominated for the best director nomination was the American Ava Du Vernay. She was nominated in 2014 for the film “Selma”. The only woman to win the award was Barbara Streisand in 1984.
This year the award ceremony will take place two months later, in April, that is, two months later than usual.
