UNFPA is alarming: 60 thousand pregnant women are at risk in Iraq

Current conflict in Iraq’s northern and western parts of Iraq threatens lives of nearly a quarter of million women and girls, including 60 thousand pregnant women who need urgent help. This is alerted by UNFPA experts.

“Taking into account the fact that there is no place in hospitals experts predict an increase the number of cases when women give birth to children without any medical help, which will have a great impact on the health of mothers and newborn babies. Besides, in a situation of conflict women and girls are more often exposed to violation and exploitation”, – says UN spokesman Stefan Dyujarik.

According to UNFPA over 6.5 million dollar will be necessary for supporting 200 thousand women and girls in Iraq.
