Women and men on the front side of banknotes

American 20-dollar bills will soon be with the image of African-American women. Her name is Harriet Tabman, who struggled against slavery, women’s rights and the implementation of social reforms in the United States. This information gave rise WomenNet.am for determining which countries are circulating banknotes with pictures of women on the banknotes and if there was  ever a banknote with the picture of a woman in Armenia or not …
The US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced about appearing the image of this lady on 20-dollar banknote through an open letter.

He said that this decision was made after the Treasury received thousands of letters from Americans who were participating in a public demonstration “Women’s place is on the front side of banknotes”. While the ministry has asked citizens to submit the names of people whose picture being worth to be on a note. There were also suggestions on Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosa Parks, but the majority was in favor of Harriet Tabmani.

Let’s note that on today’s Armenian banknotes no woman’s image is depicted. There was only an allegorical picture of woman with 1 billion nominal value, on banknotes of the Transcaucasian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (ASFSH) in 1924, which incidentally was not circulated. The history of money shows that 1995 and 1997 are presented Goddess Anahit’s tender sketches, pictures of the dancing women and women with flowers designs.

WomenNet.am- asked the central bank if it is possible to have an idea of the image of the woman soon issued on banknotes. Nune Terian /CB representative/ said that there is no such issue on the agenda at this time.
