Women among UN “Blue helmets”

 

Today is the International Day of Peacekeepers. The purpose of the UN Charter is conditioned by “Peacekeeping mission of UN” – unite forces for maintaining international peace and security. During the years of struggle and sacrifice the famous “blue helmet” has earned its place as a symbol of hope for millions of people living in war-torn areas, – said UN Secretary-General in his message on the Day of Peacekeepers.

 

‘Currently 107 thousand blue helmets serve in UN Peacekeeping Corpus representing 122 countries participating through military and police units in 16 peacekeeping missions. There are 92 thousand soldiers, 12 thousand policemen and 1700 military observers among them. Women make up 3 % of the soldiers, 10% of policemen and 4% of military observers. UN special police department is implementing the strategy in order to make the share of women 20%.
