For the first time history of Italy, the Senate will be headed by a woman

Maria Elizabeth Albert Caselati was elected president of the upper chamber of the Italian parliament, becoming the first woman to occupy the second important position of the state after the president.

 

Maria Caselati is a member of Italy’s former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s “Forward, Italy” party. She was elected after the results of the Senate session, collecting 240 votes. The voting process was broadcast on the Senate’s website.

 

Caselati is 71 years old. She is considered to be a supporter of Berlusconi, and has served as deputy minister in the former prime minister’s governments. Since 2001 he has been elected five times as a senator, holding the post of deputy head of the faction and working in the Health Committee.
