This opinion was expressed by Elinar Vardanyan – NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs, PAP faction member, during conversation with WomenNet.  Ms Vardanyan presenting her position on women’s chances to be elected by the area or open lists designated by the draft new Electoral Code.

”Judging by mechanisms provided by the Election Code, it can be assumed that women’s representation in the next parliament will be much less. I think the number of mandates intended for women will be divided in case of the use of regional or open the lists. Although women will be included in those lists, too, but I’m skeptical about the fact that one of these women will enough votes, taking into account imperfect electoral system, exist in our country. I should note that NGOs dealing with women’s issues have such concerns and they have already submited proposals to the National Assembly”.
