Eleanor Roosevelt was best First Lady ever: poll / video

The outspoken human rights advocate and wife of FDR claimed the top spot again in in the Siena College Research Institute’s survey of academics. Michelle Obama came in fifth, edging out Hillary Clinton, who finished sixth.

‘Always be on time. Do as little talking as humanly possible. Remember to lean back in the parade car so everbody can see the President,’ were all pieces of advice for future First Ladies from former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, seen here broadcasting on NBC radio in 1948.

Eleanor Roosevelt was named the greatest First Lady in the history of the U.S., while Michelle Obama, who came in fifth, edged Hillary Clinton, according to a survey of historians released over the weekend.

Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was the longest-serving First Lady ever. The survey, put out by the Siena College Research Institute, has deemed Roosevelt the No. 1 First Lady all of the five times it’s been conducted since 1982.

Following Roosevelt were Abigail Adams (the wife of President John Adams), Jacqueline Kennedy (the wife of President John F. Kennedy) and Dolley Madison (the wife of President James Madison).

Coming in fifth was current first lady Michelle Obama. Hillary Clinton fell to No. 6 from her perch at No. 4 in 2008 — the last time the survey was conducted. In the 1993 survey, Clinton was No. 2.
