Power of adolescent girls – Vision 2030
Today, when we are celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child, the world has an unprecedented opportunity to focus on the ability of girls to drive the progress and transform our world, – said UNFPA’s Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin on occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child. Last month, dramatically including girls’ rights in Sustainable development agenda 2030, the international community has responded enthusiastically to the fact that investments in the name of girls bring huge benefits.
New agenda recognizes that health and well-being of adolescent girls, including more attention paid to their sexual and reproductive health, is a necessary condition for success, and calls to focus on adolescent girls’ problems in all spheres more and more.
Despite the progress of recent years, girls still suffer from brutal injustices, discrimination and exclusion; simply because they are young and female. For many girls puberty means a rapid trajectory to inequality. But it is also an important window for preventing and protecting investments, which we must do if we seriously want to achieve full gender equality.
