Waiting for a dignified old age
October 1st is the International Day of Older Persons. It was declared on December 14, 1990 by the decision of resolution of the UN General Assembly. International Day of Older Persons is celebrated from 1993.
In 1991st the UN General Asambly adopted the Principles on the elderly people, then, in 1992, the Declaration of aging issues and finally in 2002 UN Member States came up with Ageing Madrid Strategy, which was the basis for the development of the Armenia’s national strategic plan.
What do the figures show?
According to data of the National Statistical Service, the number of our population is 2 million 995 thousand, 387 thousand of them elderly, ie 12.9% of the elderly population are 63 years old and older (international classification of elderly people who are over 65, but the pension age 63).
70 percent of the urban are elderly. Elderly women are dominated by the total number, 59 percent which is due to women’s average life expectancy which is relatively high. The average life expectancy in the country is 74.8 and for women, 77.9 for men at 71.5.
