Lawyer Cho La Aun has been recognized as a laureate of the Aurora Award

The third laureate of the Aurora humanitarian award is a lawyer and activist Cho La Aun who is fighting for the rights of the people in Myanmar. The name of the laurel was announced on the morning of June 10th, near the Khor Virap monastery, under the shadow of Ararat, as a symbol of the new bright day of the dawn.

 

Cho La Aun, who has been elected as Aurora laureate this year out of over 750 people from 115 countries, has been a human rights defender for his nation, who are deprived of their citizenship rights. Fighting for the rights of hundreds of thousands of Muslim refugees and children deprived of education by the Myanmar government, Cho La Aun spent 12 years in prison.

 

On behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide, hundreds of guests came to Khor Virap monastery late at night to learn about the winner of this year’s Aurora Award.

 

Co-founder of “Aurora” Ruben Vardanyan underlined that every year the winners are chosen not by their personal decision, but by an independent election commission.

 

The official awards ceremony was held at the Opera and Ballet Theater in the evening of June 10th.

 

Being a laureate of “Aurora”, Cho la Aun underlined that thanks to Aurora, the miserable situation of the Rohingya people becomes more and more noticeable to the international community. – “I am very proud of this award. We live in a very dangerous country and this award will protect me from such dangers.”

 

Aurora Award for 2018 Leading representatives of the international humanitarian community, as well as members of the Aurora Prize Selection Committee, arrived in Armenia to honor the laureate.
