Child’s gender is not important for me and my husband, the most important thing is to have a healthy baby
A resident of town of Gavar of Gegharquniq province Anahit Karapetyan will become a mother in a few months. It is her first pregnancy. She says: “The relatives wanted me to have a boy, but echo showed that it is a girl”.
“People think that they should first have a boy, but it depends on people, for example, Child’s gender is not important for me and my husband, the most important thing is to have a healthy baby, – says Anahit, – now we are living in times when to give birth to a child is a very difficult thing, everybody wants to have a healthy baby.
Because of sex-selective abortions in Armenia annually 1400 girls are not born, which is stated by UNFPA research data. Gegharquniq region is in leading positions according to the number of sex-selective abortions. Here it is dominant obsession to have a male child, resulting in birth sex ratio 124 boys – 100 girls.
According to the doctors in the region, the number of abortions has decreased in recent years, including sex-selective.
